PRP Injections
Description
Regenerative medicine is based on the principles of replacing damaged or diseased tissues or cells, thereby restoring their function. You may think of stem cell therapy when you hear the phrase "regenerative medicine," and stem cell therapy is an important part of what we offer. Our providers also perform platelet-rich plasma injections, which is the other half of our regenerative medicine practice. To learn more, please call TruWell Health in St. Petersburg at 727-440-5410.
PRP Injections
For tendon and ligament trauma, and other soft-tissue injuries, platelet-rich plasma is a good option for some of our patients. PRP injections involve using your own blood to prompt a healing response in injured tissue. Truly regenerative, PRP injections repair connective tissue in the knees, hips, shoulders, back and elsewhere.
The injections contain highly concentrated platelets from your own blood. The process is straightforward and painless. First, we'll draw some of your blood. The vial of blood is placed on a centrifuge, which spins the blood very fast, thereby separating the white blood cells, the red blood cells and the platelet-rich plasma. Then, the concentrated PRP is injected directly into the treatment area.
What many people admire about this treatment is that it uses only their own blood; nothing artificial or manufactured. PRP injections may be recommended for:
- Osteoarthritis
- Neck injuries
- Back injuries
- Ongoing knee pain
- ACL injury
- Tendonitis
- Sprained and strained ligaments
At the site of injection, the PRP will stimulate a healing response. Results should continue to improve for a few weeks after your appointment. With MRI and ultrasound, doctors have been able to see and confirm the tissue repair results from PRP injections. It can prevent the need for surgery and other invasive procedures. The treatment itself is fast and involves no downtime; in fact, many people get back to their normal routine immediately.
